Game 63: Big Mike Looks for Big Series Win

After last night’s disappointing walk-off loss, the Yankees tab Michael Pineda to pitch for the series win.

Pineda has been one of the Yankees’ best surprises in the starting rotation. The Yankees have won in nine of his 12 starts on the season. He bounced back from a tough outing in Toronto by allowing just one unearned run in seven innings against the Boston Red Sox on June 8.

The Angels send righty Matt Shoemaker to the mound in the series finale. He has gone 5-1 in his last six starts with a 3.19 ERA. He faced the Yankees once in 2016, allowing four runs on eight hits through 7⅔ innings.

After contributing absolutely nothing good to the game last night, the Yankees have benched Chris Carter in favor of Matt Holliday at first base. Aaron Judge gets the half-night-off as the designated hitter. Rob Refsnyder takes his usual spot in right field.

The Yankees called up a bullpen reinforcement in the form of right-hander Ronald Herrera. Herrera is currently pitching to a 1.07 ERA for AA Trenton through eight appearances. The team optioned RHP Ben Heller to clear a roster spot for Herrera.
