UPDATE (1:30 a.m. EDT on June 17): The Yankees apparently changed their mind, and have Tanaka scheduled to pitch Saturday on regular rest. Cessa will get the ball on Sunday to start the series finale.
After marked improvement pitching with extra rest, the Yankees decided to push Masahiro Tanaka back to Sunday so that he can get the extra day again. Luis Cessa starts in his place on Saturday.Embed from Getty Images
Tanaka has been struggling all year, so the team decided to push him back and start the opening game of the road trip in Anaheim. The defense behind him was poor, but his only bad mistake was allowing an early solo home run to Kole Calhoun. He allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Cessa was recalled yesterday when the Yankees officially placed CC Sabathia on the 10-day disabled list. Joe Girardi confirmed that Cessa would get at least one turn in the rotation. The 25-year-old has a 3-6 record and a 4.15 ERA in 11 games for Scranton, all but one being starts. Cessa has appeared in one game this season for the Yankees, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 3⅓ innings in a mop-up role on May 1.
