UPDATE (3:39 p.m. EDT): Erik Boland of Newsday has reported that Matt Holliday has been scratched because of an allergic reaction. Starlin Castro enters the lineup as the designated hitter to replace him.

The Yankees really need Masahiro Tanaka to be the ace they pay him to be, and stop the Yankees’ four-game losing streak.

Tanaka was on the mound for the last game the team won, throwing 6⅔ innings and getting a no-decision June 12 in Anaheim. He started that game with extra rest, but the team decided to start him today on normal rest. Tanaka had one of his best outings against Oakland May 26, striking out 13 batters in 7⅓ innings. He was given the loss on a technicality.

Countering for Oakland is right-hander Jesse Hahn. He got a no-decision his last time out in Tampa Bay, allowing three runs through five innings of work. His last five starts have not been terribly sharp, as his ERA is 4.32 and opponents bat .309. As a result, the A’s have lost four out of those last five.

Aaron Hicks and Gary Sánchez continue to be unavailable. Mason Williams and Austin Romine get their second straight starts at center field and catcher, respectively. Ronald Torreyes gets the start again today, this time giving Starlin Castro a breather at second base.
