Gary Sánchez and Aaron Hicks have sat out consecutive games, and the depleted Yankee bullpen finally got the rest it needed behind Domingo Germán’s superb mop-up job. The Bombers task spot-starter Luis Cessa with pitching the final game of an awful road trip. Cessa has logged just 3⅓ in mop-up relief for the Yanks, but pitched to a 4.15 ERA in 10 starts for AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The A’s tab righty Jharel Cotton to go for the sweep. Cotton looked unhittable in the beginning of his May 27 outing in the Bronx. But, the Yankees eventually tagged him for three runs in 5⅔ innings in a game they eventually won. In his last five starts, Cotton is 0-4 with a 6.59 ERA. In that span, he has given up eight home runs in 27⅓ innings.

Gary Sánchez returns to the Yankee lineup after being limited to pinch-hitting duty when he tweaked a muscle stealing a base earler in the series.

The Yanks made the move to reinstate Aroldis Chapman from the disabled list, and optioned catcher Kyle Higashioka back to Scranton.
