Game 69: Montgomery Miracle?

The Yankees have lost seven straight, and now it’s Jordan Montgomery‘s turn to try and straighten things out.

Montgomery was tagged with a no-decision his last time out, which was June 15 in Oakland. He allowed four runs on seven hits through 5⅔ innings. Prior to that, he had won two consecutive decisions, allowing a combined two runs on eight hits to Toronto and Baltimore.

Ricky Nolasco brings his 2-8 record and 5.01 ERA to Yankee Stadium for his fifth career start against the Yankees. Nolasco has allowed a league-leading 21 home runs so far this season. He carries a 5.91 ERA against the Yankees in 21⅓ innings into tonight’s appearance. He does not have a win since April 27, during which time he is 0-6 with a 5.51 ERA.

After pinch-hitting with Austin Romine last night, Manager Joe Girardi has left Chris Carter out of the lineup. Comments from Girardi and GM Brian Cashman pregame indicated that Girardi has asked the front office for an alternative at first base. The Yankees do not believe Tyler Austin is ready, and have opted for Carter’s past MLB success until they are satisfied with Austin’s development.

Speaking of Romine, he gets the start behind the plate as Matt Holliday starts at first base in Carter’s absence. Gary Sánchez gets the half-night-off as the designated hitter. Sánchez is 5-for-7 (.714) with two RBI in two games as the DH.
