Game 71: Tanaka Tries to Rebound vs. Darvish

Arguably the brightest pitching stars to make the trek across the Pacific face off tonight as the Yankees welcome the Texas Rangers to the Bronx.

Masahiro Tanaka makes his 15th start of the season looking to help his 5-7 record and 6.34 ERA. Last start certainly was an enigma for Tanaka, as he allowed five runs (three home runs) but struck out 10 batters. It was the sixth time he allowed at least five runs, and the second time he struck out at least 10 batters. Tanaka is 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in two career starts against the Rangers.

Fellow countryman Yu Darvish counters for the Rangers. Darvish has pitched to a 5-3 record and a 3.35 ERA. After missing all of 2015 with Tommy John surgery, he appears to be settling back into his spot atop the Rangers rotation. He got hit around his last time out against Seattle, allowing a season-high five runs on eight hits. Many Yankees have good numbers against him, despite his 3-1 record and career 2.01 ERA against them.

Joe Girardi revealed last night that Chase Headley was scratched with back spasms, and reports indicated that he received an epidural to help treat them. The team has said he will be out until Sunday at the earliest. Ronald Torreyes starts again in his place. Backup catcher Austin Romine was seen taking ground balls at third base pregame, indicating that he will be the emergency option at the hot corner.

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported via Twitter that outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury passed his concussion test. That result clears him to begin a rehab assignment, but the Yankees have not revealed when or where that will begin.
