Game 72: Austin Returns to the Bronx

Tyler Austin will bat seventh and play first base in his return to the Bronx, which happens to be the middle game of the series against the Texas Rangers.

Austin, who debuted August 13 with back-to-back home runs with Aaron Judge, was recalled from AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after last night’s walkoff to replace the designated-for-assignment Chris Carter.

Luis Cessa gets another turn in the spot vacated by CC Sabathia. He allowed four runs in four innings in his June 18 start in Oakland. He lasted just 73 pitches into that outing. Obviously, he wants to improve his 7.36 ERA/6.14 FIP.

The Rangers send Austin Bibens-Dirkx to the mound. He has made eight total appearances, and has a 2-0 record through three starts. As a starter, he carries a 4.86 ERA through 16⅔ innings pitched. He let up five runs through five innings June 19 against Toronto, but received a no-decision.

After starting in 26 consecutive games, Brett Gardner gets the day off. Aaron Hicks shifts over to left field, and Mason Williams gets the start in center field. Williams will hit in the leadoff spot, which typically belongs to Gardner. As expected, Austin Romine will catch the day game after a night game. Gary Sánchez also had two passed balls and struggled with his receiving last night. Ronald Torreyes starts again at third base as Chase Headley‘s epidural to fight back pain keeps him out another day.

After passing a concussion test, outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury begins a rehab assignment tonight for AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The fact that his rehab begins as high as AAA means he’ll probably be ready sooner rather than later. He had already been working out with AA Trenton, but did not play in any games.
