(UPDATE at 12:05 a.m. EDT): The injury has been announced as an open rupture of the right patella tendon in Fowler’s right knee. He will undergo surgery on the knee tonight.

Dustin Fowler crashed hard into a wall down the right field line in pursuit of a foul ball. He tried to stand after the collision, but could not put weight on his right leg. He had to be carted off of the field.

Tonight was Fowler’s first big league game, and he was removed before getting his first plate appearance. Rob Refsnyder took over in right field. Fowler had been slashing .293/.329/.542 at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to earn his promotion to the MLB.

This is a developing story. Please stay tuned for updates as they come in.
