Three Baby Bombers were in the starting lineup for the Scottsdale Scorpions for their 3-to-0 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox yesterday.
- CF Estevan Florial (No. 3 NYY, No. 78 MLB) – 2-for-5, SB, K
- 1B Billy McKinney (No. 23 NYY) – 1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
- SS Thairo Estrada (No. 17 NYY) – 2-for-4, K
What’s impressive is that each player collected at least one hit, and only one strikeout. All three of these prospects now have their season average up to or above .300, which has to make the Yankees department of player development ecstatic.
Billy McKinney’s RBI yesterday brought his total to 19 for the season, which leads the league. He was briefly tied with and Oakland A’s prospect at 18, but continues to produce at an impressive rate. The other incredible thing about McKinney is that he is learning a new position to increase his versatility.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported in September that McKinney would be added to the 40-man roster this offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, and increased versatility will only serve him well.
Thairo Estrada, Billy McKinney and LHP Justus Sheffield are the three Yankees representatives at tonight’s AFL Fall Stars game. McKinney starts in left field batting cleanup, Estrada starts at second base and bats eighth. Sheffield is the starting pitcher for the East Division team. First pitch is at 8:08 p.m. Eastern Time.
