FORT MYERS, FLA. – Well, the Yankees took their first loss of 2019 at the hands of the defending champs. The regulars who were in the lineup for the Bombers looked great, as each of Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres and Greg Bird collected hits. Clint Frazier also recorded a hit as he pursues the starting role in left field.

Nestor Cortes Jr. looked like your stereotypical crafty lefty, using strong offspeed pitches and the occasional arm angle change to retire hitters. The box score will tell you he gave up four runs, but two of them came once Drew Hutchison came into the game. Danny Coulombe, Cale Coshow and Rex Brothers held the Sox scoreless until the eighth, and Joe Harvey gave up a few runs before Phillip Diehl cleaned things up.

Not too much to gather from this game. There’s no reason to overreact at this stage in the spring. No one got hurt and there’s another game tomorrow.

Notes From Tampa:

  • DJ LeMahieu is seen as the backup first baseman, according to manager Boone. That means the loser of the Bird/Luke Voit battle will begin the season at Triple-A. It will be interesting to see how LeMahieu reacts to his time at first base this spring, given that he has not played there for more than eight innings in a season.
  • J.A. Happ and Luis Severino threw simulated games in Tampa, facing Voit, Aaron Judge and Troy Tulowitzki.
  • The Yankees have set their rotation for the next few days, with Jonathan Loaisiga starting Sunday against Tampa Bay, James Paxton going Monday against Toronto and Masahiro Tanaka on Tuesday against Philadelphia.
