With rosters at 40 for their last possible year, the Yankees expanded their current active roster to 34 players with the addition of four players from various sources. They activated infielders Thairo Estrada and Gio Urshela from the injured list, while they promoted catcher Kyle Higashioka and infielder Breyvic Valera from the now-eliminated Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Urshela had missed the requisite 10 days with a groin strain, while Estrada suffered a hamstring strain running out a ground ball (and subsequently playing out of position in right field). Higashioka and Valera stayed with the RailRiders until they were eliminated by Durham in the International League playoffs.

The Yankees are also planning to promote righty reliever Ben Heller, who had been working out of the bullpen for the RailRiders. His activation has not yet been announced since he will come off the 60-day injured list and require another 40-man roster manuever. It’s unclear if someone else would replace Heller on the 60-day IL or if someone will be designated for assignment. Heller was in the clubhouse in Boston, but not activated for Sunday’s game.

One player who won’t be a part of the roster calculus for the moment is top prospect right-hander Deivi Garcia. Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reported Sunday that he was sent to Tampa by the team to stay in shape in case of a possible call up later this season. García struggled to maintain the momentum he had as he dominated his way from Double-A to Triple-A. In 40 innings split between rotation and bullpen, the 20-year-old pitched to a 5.40 ERA in his first taste of the highest level of the minors.
